Translated, Reiki means: Universal Life Energy.

Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (15 August 1865 - 9 March 1926) who lived in Japan during the last century.  Dr Usui developed (rediscovered) this healing system from ancient Buddhist teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent his life practicing and teaching Reiki.

Reiki is a safe, natural "hands on" technique for stress reduction and relaxation, which in turn, promotes healing. It is based on the fact that energy, (Chi, Ki, Qi, a "life force") flows through us. If one's life force energy is low or out of balance, then we are more likely to become sick and feel stress. Conversely, if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki speeds the body's own natural ability to create and harmony, physical well-being and return to balance.

The work Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words; "Rei" which means "spiritual or universal power," and "Ki" which is "Life Force Energy." Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy and is often translated as "Universal Life Force."

Reiki treats holistically. Treating the whole being of a person including Mind, Body and Spirit (Energy), this in turn creates many beneficial effects. These include relaxation, feelings of peace and a calmness of decision, harmony and well-being. Reiki has been effective in virtually every known illness or disease and helps create a state of being for balance, relaxation and creation.

Reiki is recognised worldwide as a practical healing therapy and it is common to find practitioners in Hospitals, Hospices and Healing centres.

What is a Reiki Treatment?

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simply process. The recipient lies on a table (Couch, massage table, bed) and relaxes. If they are unable to lie down, a treatment can be given in a seated position. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively either on or just above the body, in a sequence of positions, which cover the body. The whole person is treated rather than just the specific symptoms.

A full treatment can take approximately one hour, with time then spent in discussion with the recipient about the outcome of the healing afterwards.

Reiki is not a religion, cult or belief system, but easily crosses all cultural and religious boundaries to assist in healing.
